PROJECT PLAN

Our design includes the quadcopter base, the bump frame, the attachment arm, and the reload mechanism.

We are currently working on the flight control and also the arm. We are in the midst of cutting and assembling the frame too.

MOTIVATION

Objective: Provide long term surveillance of an out of reach area

General Idea: Remote control aerial vehicle capable of attaching to walls

Uses: Search and Rescue, Military operations, etc

Benefits: Longer battery life, quiet, high stability

DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS

Most important building specifications:

  1. Reaction Force (upon impact with walls)

  2. Latching Force (adhesion on the surface)

  3. Microprocessor (usage of arduino)

  4. Base Stability

  5. Upthrust

QUADCOPTER PARAMETERS
  • Simple design and easy to manufacture

  • Low cost, both made from same sheet of material

  • Rigid and lightweight carbon fiber foam core

  • Multiple mounting locations for electronics and arm

  • Rounded bump frame allows for wall collisions and easy alignment for docking

  • Total weight estimated at 1lb

STICKY ARM PARAMETERS
  • Simple, light weight (estimated to be around 1 oz. with SM-S3317S Full Rotation Servo)

  • Compact (about 2 x 2")

  • Torque reduction T1/T2 = N1/N2

With a full rotation servo, we can reduce the torque by a factor of 4 or more and still have the arm capable of reaching the angle we want.

DESIGN OVERVIEW
  1. Quad-copter Chassis

    • Ubiquitous, most studied design, therefore more ready access to literature on controls

  2. Bump Frame

    • Cushions impacts

    • Protects components (specifically props)

    • Minimizes tensile force

  3. Pivoting Arm

    • Allows for simplicity of build but flexibility of use

  4. Reload Magazine (if time allows)

    • More versatility in longer term use
